Centre gives one year extension to CBI Director Praveen Sood

The three-member selection panel that met at the Prime Minister’s Office deliberated on the names of a few senior IPS officers however the committee didn't get concenses

New Delhi, May 7

The Union government has granted one year extension to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director, Praveen Sood who will now continue as the chief of the country's premier investigation agency. 

An order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, based on the recommendations of the Committee, has approved the extension in tenure of Shri Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:1986) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of one year beyond May 24.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the committee responsible for the appointment of the CBI director on May 5.

The meeting was also attended by Rahul Gandhi and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in the evening and a number of names were discussed, but the government is learnt to have pushed for a one-year extension for the incumbent director.

The three-member selection panel that met at the Prime Minister’s Office deliberated on the names of a few senior IPS officers, including Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora. However, no consensus could be reached, following which the members agreed to extend Sood’s tenure by a year. 

A 1986-batch Karnataka-cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Sood was the director general of police (DGP) of the southern state prior to his appointment. He took over as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on May 25, 2023.

Sood is a B.Tech in civil engineering from IIT, Delhi, and has a post-graduation in public policy and Management from IIM, Bengaluru, and Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, New York.
