Mumbai police arrests two in Ghatkopar hoarding collapse case

Ex-director of Ego Media Janhavi Marathe and civil contractor Sagar Kumbhar were arrested : Mumbai Police

New Delhi, June 10

The Mumbai Police arrested two people in connection with the hoarding collapse case of Ghatkopar, which killed 17 people and left many people injured in the city last month.

17 people, including a retired Air Traffic Control (ATC) general manager and his wife, were killed after the hoarding collapsed during incessant rains in various parts of Maharashtra on May 16. 

The two people were identified as ex-director of Ego Media Janhavi Marathe and civil contractor Sagar Kumbhar. 

The police stated that Marathe was a director with the firm till December last year and had allegedly received financial benefits in connection with the ill-fated hoarding, while Patil was held after a probe showed he was the contractor who erected the structure.

Earlier, the police had arrested Bhavesh Bhinde, the owner of Ego Media, and the structural engineer who certified the hoarding, were taken into custody.

The officials further stated that Patil is also associated with Ego Media Private Limited, whose director Bhavesh Bhinde was named as the main accused and arrested earlier along with structural engineer Manoj Sanghu, who provided the stability certificate to the hoarding allegedly without detailed inspection," the official added.

The police have booked a case under IPC sections, including 304-2 (when there is knowledge that death may be caused by one’s act), 338 (endangering life or personal safety of other) and 34 (common intention), against directors and officials of Ego Media and other related persons.
