BSF foils gold smuggling attempt, seizes 977 grams of illegal gold at Indo Bangladesh border

New Delhi, March 3

The South Bengal Frontier of Border Security Force (BSF) foiled an attempt to smuggle gold on the Indo-Bangladesh international border in Nadia district of West Bengal. 

The jawans seized 977 grams of gold when an Indian smuggler was trying to smuggle this illegal gold bar from Bangladesh to India.The estimated value of the recovered gold bar is Rs. 84.51 lakhs. 

The BSF stated that the jawans of 32 Battalion of BSF received a reliable information that gold may be smuggled from Bangladesh by a suspected smuggler of Dharmapur village of Nadia district. Acting on this information, the jawans of the border outpost Tungi of 32 Battalion planned to catch the smuggler red-handed by laying an ambush and waited for the smuggler by hiding near fencing. After some time, the jawans saw a suspected Indian smuggler coming towards the fencing from the border village Dharmapur. The suspected smuggler reached near the fencing and he quickly retrieved a packet thrown from Bangladesh and began to retreat. Meanwhile, a jawan warned him to stop, but seeing himself surrounded by BSF, the smuggler threw the packet and started running away. The jawan fired a round of PAG in a safe direction to catch the smuggler, but the smuggler managed to escape by taking advantage of the nearby mango orchard and tall bushes.

The officials added that a search operation was launched in the area where a bar of gold was recovered in a packet, whose total weight was 977 grams  The recovered gold has been deposited in the Customs Office Majhdia and a complaint has been lodged to catch the Indian smuggler.

BSF urged the border residents to give any kind of information related to gold smuggling on BSF's Seema Sathi helpline number 14419 or on 9903472227 through WhatsApp message or voice message. A suitable reward will be given for giving concrete information and the identity of the informer will be kept confidential.
