New Delhi, March 8
The Delhi Police celebrated International Women’s Day in a memorable ceremony held at the Police Headquarters on the occasion of the International Women's Day.
Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava felicitated 22 women personnel for their remarkable efforts beyond the call of duties during corona pandemic period and 15 civilian women from various fields like medical services, social services, entrepreneurs, trainers and Good Samaritans, who have made significant contribution to the society.
Nine women who had delivered babies in PCR vans on their way to hospitals were special invitees with their kids to witness the women’s day function. Two policewomen who had helped such a lady with childbirth were also felicitated.
Speaking on the occasion, SN Shrivastava, congratulated the women personnel and other awardees who helped people in distress especially during the Pandemic period. He acknowledged these genuinely altruistic gestures which no words are sufficient to commend.
Two police women had also gone beyond any policing duties to get laboring women deliver their babies in the PCR vans on their way to hospital.
The all women PCRs that aided women during pandemic are led by DCP Esha Pandey who took out an all women PCR rally at Model Town to send message to all women on 24/7 security of women in Delhi.
CP Delhi said, “We wanted to make a statement on this Women’s Day in two ways. One, by letting our women force take command roles and manage priority policing today. Secondly, by felicitating women police officers who have done exceptional work in their fields and much beyond. Today major traffic junctions, PCR vehicles and police station functioning were commanded by women. Our idea is to profoundly state that with self belief women can and are doing marvelous works, shoulder to shoulder with men, breaking gender stereotypes.”, he said.
He further said, “We invited women from the society who have helped us serve better. We also invited the nine mothers from vulnerable sections whom we assisted to transport them to hospital for their deliveries but as providence would have it, their babies were born in our PCR vans and we got a chance to assist them.”
Reiterating Delhi Police’s Zero Tolerance approach towards crime against women, SN Shrivastatva stated that although a lot of progress has been made in achieving gender equality, discrimination is still there in some areas of society which would also change with time. Last year, the crime against women reduced by 30% in Delhi. Delhi Police is committed to ensure safety & security of women who constitute half of the population.
He enlisted the women safety measures taken up by Delhi Police like Sashakti self-defence programme, tech apps like Himmat Plus, Safe City project with 10,000 cameras etc and assured that Delhi Police is continuously striving to secure and serve women better. Ending his address with an inspiring poetry of Sh. Dinkar “Maanav jab zor lagata hai, patthar paani ban jaata hai….”, the Commissioner exhorted police women and women of the society to believe in themselves and feel empowered, with Delhi Police always available to them.
DCP Shweta Chauhan while hosting the event quoted from a poem, "Suno Draupadi, shastra utha lo, ab Govind na aayenge.." motivated women to take the onus on them and pro actively learn how to protect themselves.
Many police women officials spoke at the event narrating their experience from the time of joining the force to achieving milestones at work.
Inspector Aarti from Special Cell said, "It's been 33 years I am working in police department. I was the first beat officer appointed in Delhi Police when women officers started getting appointed bas beat officers. During my tenure at the crime branch when I went to arrest a criminal, he shot at us but we arrested them. I faced many challenges but took over all of them".
ACP Indravati, Traffic Police said, "I was a BEd student in Delhi University when police vacancies were out. I had quietly filled the recruitment form without informing anyone in the family till I got selected. Noone in my family is in police, the objected. The journey is challenging but never difficult that you cannot achieve it".
