The Delhi Police Special Cell arrested a notorious interstate criminal who was allegedly wanted in several ATM attacks in the national capital.
DCP Special Cell Pramod Kushwaha stated that Vakeel is a memeber of Mewat based gang that used to allegedly commit ATM breaks in Delhi.
The special cell identified the accused as Vakeel (33) from Nuh in Haryana who operates out of Mewat. The police recovered .32 calibre pistol from the accused.
The special cell had received information that the accused was going to arrive bear Nelson Mandela road in wee hours of morning. The police team was deployed near said place where Vakeel was spotted riding on a motorcycle and coming from Vasant Kunj side.
The officials added that when he sensed that the policemen were present at the spot he whipped out his pistol and tried to fire but he was overpowered and disarmed by the police.
The officials added that during interrogation, Vakeel has disclosed that he is an active member of interstate gang of robbers. He was wanted in 12 cases of breaking of ATMs and taking away cash cabins/trays. Members of this gang siphoned off cash amounting to Rs. 1.35 Crores. The accused persons used to spray black paint at CCTV cameras after entering in ATM booths. They used to open the ATMs with the help of gas cutter and remove the cash cabins.
The gang has used various vehicles including Creta, Scorpio etc. in commission of these crimes in Delhi. They used to identify and target ATMs in isolated and less lit areas where no guards were on duty, police added.
The police stated that all the 12 cases of breaking of ATMs. The special cell has so far arrested three members of this gang namely Liyakat, Shamsad and Vakeel who were wanted in the cases.
