New Delhi, September 9
The Gujarat Police arrested an imposter from Karnal in Harayan, who posed as CBI officer and defrauded people by claiming connections with high-level politicians, including the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
The police were on a lookout for accused identified as Bharat Chhabra (40) since over a month after he impersonated a CBI officer at a hotel in Ahmedabad and fled without settling his bill.
The police added that he claimed to have ‘deep connections’ with the CBI, Home Ministry, PMO, and even influential figures in the BJP and RSS. He allegedly used selfies and photographs with politicians to establish credibility and gain the trust of his targets. He has reportedly trapped and cheated people in several states, including Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Telangana.
He had been engaging in such fraudulent activities for the past four years. The police stated that he is a frequent traveller to Ahmedabad and has multiple cases registered against him. Chhabra reportedly stayed at two hotels in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, posing as a CBI officer, without paying for his accommodation.
His fraud came to the fore after police received multiple complaints against him from hotel owners.
