NHRC issues notice to Tamil Nadu Chief Secy, DGP on hooch tragedy

The commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police asking for a detailed report on the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy within one week

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo-moto cognisance of the deaths in Tamil hooch tragedy that has claimed 63 lives so far. 

The commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police asking for a detailed report on the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy within one week.

The notice from NHRC read, “The Commission observes states have exclusive power to regulate the production, manufacture, possession, transport, purchase, and sale of intoxicating liquors". 

It further mentioned that the report from the authorities should include the status of the FIR, action against delinquent officers, treatment of the victims, and the status of the disbursement of compensation to the aggrieved families.

The NHRC has also taken media reports on the incident under consideration. The Commission observed that the contents of the news reports, if true, “raise a serious issue of violation of the right to life of the victims.

According to reports, as many as 219 people have been admitted to various hospitals after consuming illicit liquor.
