New Delhi, June 7
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at nine locations in Punjab, targeting premises linked to fugitive gangster Goldy Brar and his associates.
The searches were conducted in the districts of Mohali, Patiala, Hoshiarpur, and Fatehgarh Sahib.
The NIA's probe revealed that Goldy Brar, along with an associate named Goldy from Rajpura, conspired to extort money from businessmen in Punjab, Chandigarh, and surrounding areas. They also provided arms and ammunition to terrorist gangs formed by Brar and were involved in narcotics smuggling and sales.
The investigation pertains to demands for extortion money and gunshots fired at a victim's residence in Chandigarh. The local police initially registered the case on January 20, and the NIA took over the investigation on March 18.
According to NIA probe, Goldy Brar and his associates, based abroad, recruited vulnerable young people into their gangs. These recruits were used to identify extortion targets, intimidate them by firing at their homes, and engage in narcotics trafficking and weapon smuggling.
NIA's crackdown comes a day after filing charges against Brar and 11 others in a separate case related to the murder of Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi.
