Odisha police arrests three people including two serving naval officials for extortion in Agniveer recruitment in Navy

New Delhi, April 25
The Odisha Police have arrested three people including two serving naval officials for their alleged involvement in extorting money from candidates by pretending to help recruit them into the Indian Navy as Agniveers.
The accused persons have been identified as Satyam Chahar, at present working at INS Kesari, Andaman and Nicobar, Vinay Kumar Ray, currently posted at INS Chilika and a Uttar Pradesh resident Bhoosan, a retired navy official.
Based on the complaint of Lieutenant Commander Adwitiya Singh, a training correspondence officer at INS Chilka, an FIR was registered at Balugaon police station on April 19. The case was registered under Section 318 (4) (cheating) and 308 (2) (extortion).
The complaint alleged that during the induction process for the post of Agniveers (senior secondary recruit/matric recruit) and Coast Guard Navik (general duty) and Yantriks, certain individuals were extorting money from candidates at the pretext of undue/illegal assistance and threatening them.
The accused persons were part of various social media groups such as WhatsApp and Telegram groups to clear doubts of the candidates regarding the documentation process for the recruitment and to help regarding enrolment as a trainee. They got in touch with various candidates during the recruitment process and extorted and cheated them, officials said.
The police found out that the accused persons have extorted money from various candidates by assuring them that they will help them in the recruitment process, the medical examination and the police verification process. Police also seized the transaction proof and bank documents.
The police have so far seized 12 accounts where transactions were ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh per person.
