New Delhi, May 27
The Uttar Pradesh police arrested a man from Bareilly who killed his wife over suspicion of an extra-marital affair and tried to pass off the murder as an attack by armed robbers.
The police stated that the incident occurred on the night of May 14 when the woman, Hemlata, was returning with her husband, Rajkumar, to her in-laws' house.
Hemlata was pregnant at the time of her death, and Rajkumar doubted that the child was his. The couple had argued over the issue just days before, prompting Hemlata to leave for her maternal home in anger.
While returning from his in-laws' house, he staged a fake robbery, during which he shot Hemlata and claimed that robbers had attacked them, robbing their bike, and shooting his wife when she resisted, police added.
The accused tried to mislead the police however, during the investigation, the police uncovered inconsistencies in Rajkumar's account and he confessed that he killed her. The police also found forensic evidence showing discrepancies in the robbery story.
The investigation also revealed that Hemlata used to make and share reels online, much to the disapproval of her husband. This led to tensions between the couple.
