12 naxals encountered in Gadchiroli in an operation by Maharashtra police

New Delhi, July 18

Twelve Naxalites were killed in an encounter with police and commandos in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. One police personnel and one jawan were injured in the gunfight.

Top Naxal commander DVCM Laxman Atram, also known as Vishal Atram, was among those who died in operations. He was in charge of the Tipagad Dalam. 

In the operation, one Police Sub-Inspector of the C60 team and one jawan sustained bullet injuries who were shifted to Nagpur for treatment. 

The Gadchiroli police stated that they launched an operation deploying seven C60 Commando teams led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operations). 

The operation targeted the Chhattisgarh border near Wandoli village following credible intelligence about the presence of 12-15 Naxals camping in the area.The confrontation saw a heavy exchange of fire that lasted intermittently for more than six hours.

The intensive area search has so far resulted in the recovery of bodies of 12 Naxals. The police also seized seven automatic weapons, including three AK-47s, two INSAS rifles, one carbine, and one Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), officials added.
