New Delhi, May 15
Amritsar city has witnessed a hooch tragedy with 23 persons dead so far.
The Punjab government has suspended two excise officers, the Station House Officer (SHO) and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
The deaths were reported in Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, Talwandi Khumman, Karnala, Bhangwan and Therewal villages, officials said.
The police informed that the incident occurred late on Monday when several people consumed spurious liquor in various villages of the Majitha area in Amritsar. It is being alleged that the cheap liquor was being sold in small packets for merely Rs. 20 and Rs. 30.

Chief Minister Mann rushed to Majitha and met all the families of the victims.
CM Mann said, “This open sale of spurious liquor wouldn't be possible without the involvement of some bureaucracy and politicians. We will expose everything and take action. The case also has Delhi links and we are on line to expose it”.
Mann announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who died and said that the Punjab government would bear the entire expense of education of the children of the victims.
Two separate cases were registered at Majitha and Kathunangal police stations in Amritsar Rural under sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Excise Act and the SC/ST Ac
