25 policemen from UP cheated by Jamtara gang of Jharkhand on pension disbursal

25 retired policemen have been cheated in a cyber fraud of over Rs 4.5 crores by Jharkhand-based Jamtara gang on the pretext of pension disbursal.
The Noida police cyber crime cell arrested a 24-year-old gang member from Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh identified as Noor Ali. Noor Ali is a native of Bhagalpur in Bihar, but settled in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab and owns a house there.
The police said the accused posed as UP treasury department officials and would call retired policemen and share confidential details with them to gain their trust.
The accused used to get database of the victims either from online data market or a database available with Jamtara based online cheating gangs, officials added.
According to the investigators, the gang used to inform the victims to update their bank account details to get their pension money in their saving accounts. The victims who got trapped were asked to share OTPs with the cheats.
After receiving their OTPs, they withdrew money from the bank accounts and transferred the money to various bank accounts opened using forged documents.
The accused has so far cheated at least 25 retired policemen.
The victims include a policeman from Varanasi who lost Rs 40 lakh, a police officer from Agra who was cheated of Rs 10 lakh and two retired policemen from Baghpat who lost Rs 23 lakh and Rs 8 lakh respectively, police informed.
The police have so far detected 80 accounts in private banks and 40 e-wallets.
They also got Rs 1.5 lakh frozen in the bank account of the accused. Similarly, e-wallets containing Rs 1.8 lakh have also been frozen with help from payment platforms.
The same gang had reportedly targeted the wife of Punjab chief minister and Patiala MP Preneet Kaur.
