Avid cyclist from Delhi dead after a BMW car hit him at Mahipalpur Flyover of Delhi

New Delhi, November 28
A 50-year-old avid cyclist who raised awareness on road safety, died after a BMW vehicle, with a VIP number plate rammed into his cycle at Mahipalpur flyover.
The deceased was identified as Subhendu Banerjee, a businessman from Gurugram and an avid cyclist. He had a helmet on and would cycle every day.
The police arrested the driver identified as Somveer (31) who was driving the BMW.
The police stated that he was riding alone when the car hit him from the rear. The incident as captured in the CCTV cameras of the vicinity showed a car sporting a Delhi Cantt Board sticker.
However, police said the owner of the car is not a member of the board but a businessman from West Delhi. The BMW’s owner has been identified as Sunil Chander (40), a resident of Punjabi Bagh who runs a mobile shop.
The police received a PCR call from Vasant Kunj in wee hours about the incident. When the police reached there, they found both the car and the cycle lying damaged on a corner of the road. The car’s windscreen was broken while the cycle was completely damaged.
The police stated that the car’s tyre had burst. The driver could not control the vehicle and hit a cyclist. He rushed the cyclist to a hospital but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The accused has been booked under sections of rash driving and causing death by negligence.
Somveer had allegedly dropped his owner off and was returning to Punjabi Bagh when he hit the victim.
The police further stated that when questioned about the Delhi Cantt sticker, the car owner Sunil said he bought the car second-hand and retained the sticker. The police have initiated a legal action against him and more sections will be added in the FIR after document verification.
