New Delhi, June 12
A Border Security Force (BSF) constable was critically injured following an attack by a few men who were illegally trying to enter India from Bangladesh.
The injured constable has been identified as Constable Gokul Mondal, who was on duty at the time.
The incident occurred on June 10 near BSF Border Outpost located in the district of Nadia in West Bengal.
The BSF stated that Mondal had observed the movement of 6-7 suspicious individuals within Indian territory. He immediately alerted adjacent ambush and patrolling parties to stay vigilant.
Around 11.20 pm, another BSF head constable spotted three-four individuals crossing the Indo-Bangladesh Border Road (IBBR) from the Bangladesh side after breaching the improvised fence.
Despite being asked to stop, the men continued advancing into Indian territory. The situation escalated when the suspected individuals attempted to encircle and potentially harm the head constable, prompting him to fire a non-lethal round in self-defence, BSF further said.
The BSF stated further that constable Gokul Mondal rushed to assist but was ambushed by the men, who were already 450 meters inside Indian territory. The attackers assaulted Mondal with sharp weapons, causing him severe injuries to his lower hip, waist, and neck. His uniform was torn, and his belt was severed by the force of the attack.
Despite these injuries Constable Mondal adhered to the non-lethal engagement protocol, refraining from using his lethal weapon. The accused managed to escape back into Bangladesh.
Mondal was subsequently evacuated to a hospital, where his condition remains critical.
The information regarding the attackers has been communicated to the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), and a Commandant-level flag meeting is scheduled to address the issue, BSF stated.
