CBI court sentences one in AP postal fraud case

The CBI Court Visakhapatnam has sentenced accused Sri Talla Narayana Rao, then Gramin Dak Sevak, Branch Post Master, Sativada under Gara Sub Post Office, Head Post Office, Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh to five years’ Imprisonment with fine of Rs.60.06 lakhs in postal fraud case.
CBI had registered the instant cases in 2016 against accused. It was alleged that then Branch Postmaster, Sativada Branch Post Office in account with Gara Sub-Post Office, during the period from 25.10.2013 to 08.09.2015 was entrusted an amount of Rs. 2.81 lakhs for disbursing wages to the MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) beneficiaries belonging to Sativada, Nizamabad and Kotturu Syrigam villages by Sub-Postmaster, Gara.
Sri T. Narayana Rao after disbursement of wages to MGNREGS while accounting for the same in Branch Office accounts, misappropriated a total amount of Rs.1.53 lakhs out of above said amount by way of increasing the number of beneficiaries and the wages paid to them by altering the figures reflected on the Point of Transaction Device (POTD) generated receipts and he reflected the amount, charged excessively in the Branch Office Daily Account.
He further sent the same to the Gara Sub Post Office and got the same accounted for against the cash supplied to him by Sub Post Office Gara. Thus, accused misappropriated an amount of Rs.1 53 lakhs entrusted under MGNREGS and caused a wrongful loss to the tune of Rs.1 53 lakhs to the postal department, the Government of Andhra Pradesh & the Govt. of India and corresponding wrongful gain to himself.
After completion of the investigation, two chargesheets were filed by CBI on 01.11.2016 and 20.02.2017 against the accused before the Hon’ble Special Court for CBI Case, officials added.
