Delhi Police arrests a property dealer for killing a man in a hit and run accident

The accused had hit a man from Madhya Pradesh with his car near Bhikaji Cama Place

New Delhi, May 2

The Delhi Police arrested a 55-year-old property dealer for allegedly killing a man in a hit-and-run incident opposite Hotel Hyatt Regency in Bhikaji Cama Place few months ago. 

The police identified the accused as Rajesh Mehta (55), a resident of Paschim Vihar.

As peer the case details, the victim, Mulu (34), who hailed from Tikamgarh in Madhya Pradesh, was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road late at night. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared dead on arrival.

The police stated that due to presence of few CCTV cameras, the accused couldn't be identified for long. The team then examined all vehicles along Ring Road, going from Dhaula Kuan to AIIMS, eventually narrowing down to over 20 vehicles. These vehicles and their drivers were examined and the accused was caught. 

The police caught the accused when one of the drivers mentioned seeing a white car hit Mulu. The police then traced all white colour vehicles travelling along that route around the time of the incident. One footage helped them spot a Hyundai Alcazar car, which was damaged on the driver’s side.

The police searched for the car in many parts of the city finally narrowing it down to a residence in Shiv Vihar Colony in Paschim Vihar,

DCP (Southwest) Surendra Chaudhary told media that the investigation revealed the car belonged to Seema Mehta, who was picked up for questioning. She later admitted her husband, Rajesh Mehta, was driving the car at the time of the accident. During questioning, Rajesh then infromed that around 10 pm, he was driving towards Green Park via Ring Road towards AIIMS at high speed. He hit an unknown man crossing the road and fled.

Mehta has been booked under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (death by negligence) of BNS, was arrested and his car seized, police informed.
