Delhi Police Special Cell arrested an interstate gangster, wanted in 20 cases in national capital

New Delhi, April 3

Delhi Police Special Cell arrested an interstate gangster, wanted in 20 cases in the national capital. The gangster, a part of the Mewat based gang that attacked ATMs in the city. 

The accused was identified as Shorab alias Sabba Khan (24) of Nuh in Haryana. The accused was apprehended at about 04.30 am near Silkho Toll Plaza in Nuh (Mewat) Haryana.   

The special cell has been probing and tracing Mewat based gangs allegedly involved in armed robbery cases in Delhi and Haryana. The special cell received specific information that Shorab is hiding in the area of Kaama (Rajasthan) and would pass through Silkho Toll Plaza and would go to Mewat in Haryana to meet his contact. 

The officials stated that Shorab was spotted at 4.30 am while travelling in a taxi and passing through the said toll plaza. On  seeing the police, he got down from  taxi and tried to escape, but he was promptly nabbed by the members of team. He was booked under appropriate sections of law. 

The officials added that Shorabh has disclosed that he is an active member of two Mewat based interstate gangs of ATM robbers indulging in breaking/uprooting of ATMs in Delhi NCR and siphoning off cash. Sorabh with 7 gang members including kingpin Shahid had uprooted 8 ATMs in Delhi and Haryana in the year 2019. Shorab has been absconding for two years and he is not attending the courts in all above these cases. 

The officials stated Shorab with six of his associates of another gang led by Liyakat-Zavedhad broken/cut 12 ATMs with gas cutters and other tools in a span of just two months from December 2020 to January 2021 and took away cash cabins with available cash from these ATMs. Sorabh is real brother of Liyakat, one of the two kingpins of second gang. 

Explaining their modus operandi, the officials said that the accused used to spray black paint at CCTV cameras after entering in ATM booths. They used to open the ATMs with the help of gas-cutter and remove the cash cabins. The main job of Shorab in both the gangs was to examine the ATMs. He being expert mechanic, had to decide whether  the ATMs was to be cut open with the help of gas cutter & other tools  or to uproot the entire ATM machine depending on the type of installation of ATMs. Accused persons had used various vehicles including Creta, Scorpio etc. in commission of these crimes in Delhi. They used to identify and target ATMs in isolated and less lit areas where ATMs were unmanned.

The Special Cell has so far arrested six members of this gang namely Liyakat, Shamsad, Vakeel, Rahul, Shakeel and Shorab, all wanted in the above mentioned cases. With the arrest of these persons, crime of breaking or uprooting of ATMs in Delhi has been contained to a large extent.
