New Delhi, June 3

A constable formerly posted at Delhi Police Special Cell robbed Rs 51 lakh and two boxes of gold from the high-security malkhana (storage room) of the Delhi Police Special Cell’s old office on Lodhi Road.

The incident took place on May 31 morning. The robber was identified as Khurshid who recently got posted in Northeast district.

Head constable, Khurshid, had been deployed with the Special Cell, he was one of the security personnel at the same malkhana where he allegedly committed the theft.

When they questioned the officer about the theft, police said it came to light that he had allegedly executed a similar heist at the malkhana about 1.5 months ago, when he was deployed as an assistant to the malkhana-in-charge.

The missing amount remained undetected till the latest theft took place.

The malkhana is under high security watch. There is a deployment of Nagaland Police personnel, who have their office there.

There is a duty officer who checks the details of everyone who enters the complex. Another duty officer checks entrants for the final time before they enter the high-security area, officials added.

Investigation so far has shown that Khurshid entered the premises at 4 am on May 31. He was in the store room for around half an hour. The CCTV cameras captured him coming out with two boxes of gold jewellery and a bag full of money.

The duty officer who was allegedly asleep when he left the premises saw the door open and alerted others.

Khurshid was allegedly in debt after he lost a huge amount of money in online gambling.
