Film director Anurag Kashyap booked in Varanasi for hurting religious sentiments

The complainant claimed that Kashyap's statement had sparked outrage within the Brahmin community and appeared to be a deliberate attempt to insult Sanatan Dharma

New Delhi, April 24

A case was registered against film director Anurag Kashyap in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi for his alleged remark against the Brahmin community.

The complainant is a Varanasi resident Govind Chaturvedi, who alleged that Kashyap had deeply hurt the sentiments of the Brahmin community with a divisive remark shared on his official social media handles, including Instagram. 

Chaturvedi alleged that the statement had sparked outrage within the Brahmin community and appeared to be a deliberate attempt to insult Sanatan Dharma.

Kashyap was booked under Section 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.
