The Delhi Police have arrested the law student and his father a retired IAS officer in the hit and run accident of a businessmen with his car in Great Kailash area of Delhi.
The accused was identified as Raj Sundaram (27) who was driving the Volkswagen R Roc that hit the victim. His father Pandyan Kalyan Sundaram is a retired IAS officer who last served in the Ministry of Petroleum.
The police have also booked the retired bureaucrat for harbouring his son. Raj is a law student from a leading law institute in Gurugram.
As per the case details, Raj was driving the newsly purchased car with more 120 kmph speed in Greater Kailash area when the victim identified as Anant Mandelia (37) was out for walk. The impact of the accident was such that the victim was dragged on the bonnet for over 100 metres before falling on the ground severely injured.
The victim is admitted at Max Hospital, Saket where he was put on ventilator support.
The incident was captured in the CCTV footage outside Mandelia’s house. The vehicle was seized on the same day of the accident by the police and the law student was identified.
According to the police, after the police had registered the case, the accused and his father were missing. The police traced them using technical surveillance. The accused took shelter in Le Meredian hotel in Gurugram and were found communicating with the family and advocates on What’s App.
During questioning, Raj initially told investigators his father driving the car. However, the CCTV footage had him captured running out of the car after the accident. His father was sitting on the passenger side.
The police have also found records of Raj over speeding the vehicle at various other parts of Delhi through the speedometer of the car confirming that this was not the first time he was over speeding the car and he had been allegedly doing that since he got to drive the vehicle but this time he knocked down a citizen on the road.
DCP South Banita Mary Jaiker stated that the accused was arrested outside Le Meridian Hotel in Gurugram while his father Pandyan Kalyan Sundram has been booked for harbouring him.
The police had initially registered a case of rash driving however after the instigation they have booked the accused for attempt to murder and culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 307 and 308 of the IPC. His father has been booked under IPC section 212 for harbouring.
