The main accused in the recent grenade attack in Amritsar was killed in a police encounter after a brief exchange of fire.
The suspect was identified as Gursidak Singh who later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His accomplice, Vishal, managed to escape.
The police stated that a specific intelligence was received about the accused moving around the Rajasansi area. A team comprising personnel from the CIA and Chheharta police was formed to detain them. When police attempted to stop the duo on their motorcycle, they abandoned their vehicle and opened fire.
Head Constable Gurpreet Singh was hit on the left arm, while another bullet struck Inspector Amolak Singh. A third round hit a police vehicle. In self-defence, Inspector Vinod Kumar fired back, injuring Gursidak.
Both the injured officer and the accused were rushed to the civil hospital, where Gursidak later died.
As per the case details, there was a grenade attack on the Thakurdwara temple in Amritsar's Khandwala area in early hours of March 15. The CCTV footage had captured two men on a motorcycle stopping outside the temple before one of them threw an explosive device. The powerful blast, which occurred around 12:35 am, caused panic in the area but resulted in no casualties.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also commented on the incident, attributing it to "mischievous elements" trying to destabilise the state. “Efforts are made from time to time to disturb Punjab. Even drug smuggling is part of this. Punjab Police is proactive and well-equipped to maintain law and order. They don't want Punjab to be at peace”.
