Kolkata police arrests three persons for vandalising SSKM medical hospital, assaulting doctors

A 15-year-old child died during treatment at the hospital following which his relatives assaulted the on-duty doctor and also vandalised the trauma care unit

New Delhi, August 20

The Kolkata Police has arrested three people for allegedly assaulting a doctor and vandalising the trauma care unit of the city's SSKM Medical College and Hospital after one of their relatives died at the hospital during treatment.

The police said that a 15-year-old child died during treatment at the hospital following which his relatives assaulted the on-duty doctor and also vandalised the trauma care unit on August 18.

The accused has been identified as Jaynal Abedin, Monuddin and Md Muzahidin.

The police added that the accused ransacked the government property on the fourth floor of Trauma Care Centre under orthopaedics Unit-III of IPGME&R-SSKM Hospital after hearing the information of sudden death. When one of the on-duty doctors, Dr Subrata Sur, tried to intervene, he was also assaulted by the accused. The accused also assaulted police personnel of the hospital and also stopped them from discharging their duties.

The incident came against the backdrop of ongoing protests by the medical fraternity against the brutal rape-murder of female doctor at RG Kar Medical College where doctors are demanding security in their profession.
