NCW issues notice to West Bengal government in North Dinajpur violence case

The incident has taken place in North Dinajpur wherein a man and a woman were thrashed publicly over allegations of being in an illicit relationship

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the West Bengal incident from North Dinajpur; a video of which went viral on social media shocking the viewers. 

The incident has taken place in North Dinajpur wherein a man and a woman were thrashed publicly over allegations of being in an illicit relationship.

The NCW said, “Disturbing report from Laxmikantapur, North Dinajpur, WB: A woman was brutally beaten by Tajemul, aka JCB, known for quick 'insaf' sabhas and ties with MLA Hamidur Rahaman. NCW is deeply concerned about rising violence against women in WB.”

“Hearing scheduled on 4thJuly 2024 at 2:30PM. Tajemul has been sent a letter to appear in person or face action. The rising cases in West Bengal for crime against women remain a concern for the commission”, it added. 

The accused was identified as Tajmul alias JCB, who was arrested.

The West Bengal Police registered a case over the incident, after a video of the assault was widely shared on social media.

The accused who was seen in the video beating up the two with a bamboo stick was allegedly a local Trinamool leader of Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district where the incident occurred following a decision of a kangaroo court. 

The West Bengal government meanwhile stated that they are probing the incident.
