Rape convict escaped from a hospital in Jharkhand after killing a security guard

The convict identified as Shahid Ansari was convicted in a POCSO case in Dhanbad

New Delhi, August 13

A prisoner, serving a life sentence in a rape case, escaped from police custody after killing a security guard at a hospital in Hazaribagh of Jharkhand.

The police stated that the incident occurred at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital. The convict identified as Shahid Ansari had been receiving treatment at the hospital for the past 14 days, reportedly due to complaints of numbness in the right side of his body. 

He attacked the guard with an iron rod before fleeing the scene.

The police rushed to the spot and called in forensic teams have been called in to assist. 

The police added that he had been transferred from Dhanbad Jail to Hazaribagh Central Jail. He was involved in two criminal cases in Dhanbad. In one case, he was charged with several serious offenses, including rape and violations under the POCSO Act while in the other case, he was charged with murder and other grave crimes. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The CCTV footage of the medical college showed Ansari committing the crime and exiting the premises. No security personnel were stationed outside the hospital.

The police have launched a manhunt to trace him.
