20 inmates in Tihar Jail clash with jail staff and suffered injuries

New Delhi, June 23

Twenty inmates clashed with jail officials inside Delhi’s Tihar Jail suffering injuries and cut marks on their hands.

The prison officials had conducted a search operation on June 21 at around 5-6 pm and a mobile phone and an improvised blade were recovered from jail numbers 8 and 9. The officials also noticed some suspicious movements of a few inmates and conducted further raids where they recovered SIM cards and mobile phones.

The officials stated that when they questioned an inmate and took him to the barrack to recover more items that he might have hidden, he allegedly instigated other inmates who all got together to clash with the jail staff.

They allegedly took a blade and caused injuries on their hands and abused the jail staff. This was done to resist raids inside cells to avoid raids, officials said.

The matter even reached the police control room as one of the inmates even managed to take out a mobile phone and called his family who then called PCR about the incident and to police that jail staff is thrashing inmates inside the Tihar Jail.

The prisons department has seized the CCTV footage of the incident and filed a complaint at Hari Nagar police station. The higher authorities are also conducting an inquiry into the incident.
