Agniveer robs jeweller in Bhopal off valaubles worth Rs. 50 lakhs, held

The main accused has been identified as Mohit Singh Baghel, the Agniveer (a soldier on a short-term contract) who looted the jeweller at gunpoint

New Delhi, August 21

The Bhopal police have arrested an Agniveer from the Indian Army and six others have been arrested in connection with robbing jewellery and cash worth over Rs 50 lakhs at gunpoint.

The main accused has been identified as Mohit Singh Baghel, the Agniveer (a soldier on a short-term contract). 

Apart from Baghel and Rai, the others arrested in connection with the robbery have been identified as Vikas Rai (brother of Akash Rai), Monika Rai (Akash Rai's sister), Amit Rai (Akash Rai's brother-in-law), Gayatri Rai (Akash Rai's mother) and Abhay Mishra (Akash Rai's friend)

Baghel was posted in Punjab's Pathankot and was on leave. He had gone to Bhopal to meet his brother-in-law. 

The police stated that Baghel had planned the robbery intending to pay off his brother-in-law's house loan and then enjoy himself with the remaining money.

The police investigation showed that Baghel and his friend Akash Rai carried out the robbery at the jewellery shop on August 13. In a CCTV footage of the incident, Baghel and Rai, both wearing helmets, are seen threatening the shop employee. Baghel brandished a pistol at him and demanded him to give jewellery and cash to them.

The police scanned over 400 CCTVs among others in the city and narrowed down on the the duo. A reward of Rs 50,000 had been announced for information leading to the arrest of the accused.

The police have sought Baghel's details from the Indian Army for verification.
