UP Govt throws a surprise, IPS Rajeev Krishna appointed as new DGP UP Police

The Uttar Pradesh Government threw in a surprise and appointed 1991 batch IPS officer Rajeev Krishna as the new acting Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh Police.
From weeks of speculation and anticipation regarding a possible extension of the tenure of DGP Prashant Kumar, the government chose Rajeev Krishna as the successor.
While Prashant Kumar was regarded as te “chosen one” of UP CM Yogi Adityanath who reportedly entrusted key work at Prashant Kumar from the time of his posting as Additional DGP (Law and Order). He was also promoted to the post of DG, he was made Special DG (Law and Order). Kumar was expecting an extension however he who was handling the law and order of UP from five years didn't get an one.
Rajeev Krishna took over the baton from outgoing DGP Prashant Kumar on May 31 night wile Kumar penned an emotional note after leaving the UP Police Headquarters.
The newly appointed DG Rajeev Krishna was given a ceremonial guard of honour.

With over four years of service left till June 2029, Rajeev Krishna is one of the youngest IPS officers to head the state police force.
The government order also states that Rajeev Krishna will continue to hold charge of director general of Vigilance and director of UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board.
Interestingly, he was also one of the youngest to become an IPS officer at the age of 22.
Hailing from Gautam Buddha Nagar, Krishna joined the Indian Police Service in 1991. He has previously been posted as superintendent (SP) and then as senior superintendent (SSP) and has been in Firozabad, Etawah, Mathura, Fatehgarh, Bulandshahr, Noida, Agra, Lucknow and Bareilly.
In 2007, when the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) was formed in Uttar Pradesh, Krishna became its first deputy inspector general (DIG) and led the force.
DG Krishna’s wife, Meenakshi Singh, is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer and is currently posted as an income tax commissioner in Lucknow. Additionally, his brother-in-law, Rajeshwar Singh, was a joint director in ED and is now the BJP MLA from Sarojini Nagar assembly segment. Rajeshwar Singh’s wife, Laxmi Singh, is Noida police commissioner.
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet had also made a new rule regarding the appointment of the DGP. Under this rule, a five-member committee headed by a retired High Court judge will select the DGP. The panel will include nominated members of the Union Public Service Commission and Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, Principal Secretary (Home) and officers who have served as DGP of Uttar Pradesh.
Despite the proposal getting the Cabinet's nod, the state government has not been able to appoint a selection committee till now.
The top contenders for the post were said to be Renuka Mishra (1990 batch), Daljeet Singh Chawdhary (1990 batch) who is DG BSF, Sandeep Salunkhe (1990 batch) who is DG Human Rights, MK Vishal (1990 batch) who is in Degree Power Corporation. However he and Salunkhe will retire in February 2026 while Daljeet Singh Chawdhary will retire in November 2025. The government yet chose Rajeev Krishna as the new acting DGP of UP.
Prashant Kumar was the fourth acting DGP consecutively in the past two years. The last permanent DGP in the state was Mukul Goel, who was removed three years ago on the grounds of indiscipline.
Since then, five acting DGPs have been appointed, which also included D.S. Chauhan, R.K. Vishwakarma and Vijay Kumar.
