New Delhi, August 14
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the murder rape case of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the case to the central agency.
After noting serious lapses in the hospital administration's response to the death of the doctor and the demand of the victims' parents for an independent investigation, the HC ordered CBI to take over the probe.
The incident of rape and brutal murder of the trainee doctor in Kolkata took the medical professionals by storm and massive protests broke out in Kolkata gradually moving to the national capital and other cities. The doctors have been demanding better protection for health workers.
The semi-nude body of the post-graduate 31-year-old trainee doctor was found inside the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week. She was brutally murdered, and her body bore multiple injury marks. The preliminary autopsy report indicated sexual abuse before her murder.
The accused identified as Sanjay Roy a civic volunteer in the police welfare board and posted at the police outpost in RG Kar Medical College. He had joined the Kolkata Police as a civic volunteer in 2019. He used to also wear t-shirts with tag of Kolkata police written on it. He had four marriages in past and a history of violence towards women.
Sanjoy Roy also confessed to previous violent behaviour towards women, including his mother, sister, and wife. He has a previous complaint against him for physical abuse of his wife registered in one of the police stations in Kolkata.
Another shocking revelation has come to the fore that the doctor's murder was reported as suicide to her family. The protesting doctors alleged that there are many more lapses in the investigation and efforts were made to cover up the incident.
The West Bengal Doctors’ Forum wrote to the CBI alleging that attempts were being made to tamper with evidence by carrying out construction work near the spot where the body of a female doctor was found at a Kolkata hospital.
