Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derails in Gonda, loco pilot claims explosion, police denies

One of the loco pilots of the Dibrugarh Express identified as Tribhuvan claimed that he heard a loud explosion before the train derailed causing the accident

New Delhi, July 19

At least three people were killed and 30 others injured after eight bogies of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed between Motiganj-Jhilahi railway stations in Gonda district.

One of the loco pilots of the Dibrugarh Express identified as Tribhuvan claimed that he heard a loud explosion before the train derailed causing the accident. The Uttar Pradesh police however denied the claims. 

DGP UP Prashant Kumar said there was no explosion in the train derailment incident.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in a statement, "The train accident in Gonda district is extremely unfortunate. District administration officials have been directed to carry out relief and rescue operations on a war footing and to take the injured to the hospital on top priority and provide them proper treatment. I pray to Lord Shri Ram for the speedy recovery of the injured," 

The Ministry of Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for grievous injury and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries. The railways have also initiated a high-level inquiry has been ordered by the railways.
