New Delhi, May 25

When Delhi was gasping for oxygen and people struggling to find a confirmed bed for their loved ones, Delhi Police not only aided the citizens with supplying oxygen and admitting them to hospitals, they walked a mile more to set up a service for the plasma donors.

The Delhi police formed a platform named Jeevan Rakshak for plasma donation which aided hundreds of Covid patients untill recently ICMR declared plasma therapy as

As soon as the initiative was started by Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava in April, the policemen opted in to aide and donate.

Over 200 policemen registered themselves on Jeevan Rakshak for donation including IPS officer Manoj CG, Add DCP Outer North.

Elaborating more on, Delhi Police PRO Chinmoy Biswal said, "209 donors (policemen) registered on JR app. However, only 49 were found suitable whose plasma was extracted".

Jeevan Rakshak initiative of Delhi Police was launched to provide a platform for the public in which any volunteer either police personnel or civilian, intending to donate plasma to save precious life, can register himself in Plasma Donor. Similarly, any police personnel or civilian in need of plasma can register himself in patients/recipients.

A databank of plasma donors and patients/ recipients is being maintained by the Delhi Police.

Two Delhi police constables Ravindra Dhar and Amit Phogat have been running an initiative "Jeevandayini" since two years now who became active blood and plasma donors since the first wave of Covid struck. The Delhi police's Jeevan Rakshak team also coordinated with Jeevandayini group of policemen to get more donors and supply plasma

Explaining the process of Jeevan Rakshak, the police officials stated that On clicking, the option of “Donate Plasma-Save Lives”, the individual need to fill his email ID & then feed his password to get access of the portal. Thereafter, a Google form showing “Jeevan Rakshak- An initiative of Delhi Police” two separate fields of “Plasma Donor & Plasma Recipients” will open. After that he can choose the concerned field. On choosing the field “I am a Plasma Donor”- a separate form containing various fields like name of donor, age etc will open. The donor will have to mention details in all the fields and submit the form.

Similarly, on choosing the field “I am a Plasma Recipient (Patient/caretaker)”- a form containing the various fields in c/w Name of patient, Age of patient, Gender will open. The recipient will have to mention details in all the fields and submit the form.

In order the ensure the collected plasma reaches the patients the police also made

DCP Biswal added, "We are in tie up with ILBS. We send the willing donor to ILBS where his tests are conducted and if antibodies are available, plasma is extracted. Plasma is then provided to the needy recipient".

The first donation took place on April 27 for  a 55-year-old resident of Saket with blood group O+ who was admitted in Max Hospital Saket and was in urgent need of plasma was given plasma by a samaritan from Andrews Ganj

A woman Sub Inspector of Delhi Police  received plasma from a police donor through Jeevan Rakshak. On 28 April,  seven donors were from police while two were public donors. On the recipients, four were public persons while five police persons received plasma.

Though there are several NGOs and individual initiatives to aide Covid patients, the Delhi Police thought of a platform for plasma donation through policemen as a small step to ensure police also aide in saving lives.

When the second wave of Covid hit hard and Delhi experienced shortage of oxygen, Delhi police provided oxygen to hospitals, created green corridors for transport of oxygen tankers, individual residences, supplied life saving drugs, food and medicines to senior citizens, cracked down on blackmarketing of life saving drugs to aide distressed citizens.

However, with this initiative, the police have directly saved lives of hundreds, when asked, who received plasma through policemen.
