Locals clashed with J&K police during protest over Mata Vaishnodevi ropeway project

The protestors claimed that the ropeway will adversely affect those people whose livelihoods depend on the pilgrims taking the old route

New Delhi, December 26

The Jammu and Kashmir Police allegedly resorted to lathicharge after protests over a proposed ropeway to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine intensified, leading to a 72-hour shut down in Katra town.

The protest was led by the Katra Sangharsh Samiti along with locals, shopkeepers gathered proposed Rs 300 crore Katra-Sanjichhat ropeway that is meant to bypass the old Katra-Banga-Adi Kunwari route of the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage.

When the protestors were sopped by police, they allegedly got into a scuffle. The protestors claimed that the ropeway will adversely affect those people whose livelihoods depend on the pilgrims taking the old route.

The police resorted to mild lathicharge after the protesters insisted on carrying on with their march. 

The security forces conducted flag march to maintain law and order in Katra following protests against the proposed Ropeway Project to the Vaishno Devi shrine.
