Old dilapidated building in Bawana collapsed leaving four sheep grazers dead

New Delhi, February 12

An old dilapidated building in Bawana collapsed leaving four persons dead including a minor girl who were grazing sheep in the an empty land near the building. 

The police identified the victims as Rukaiya Khatoon (55), Shahzad (25), Danish (24) and Afrin (9), who were from the Bawana JJ colony area. 

The police control room received an emergency call that a building near the DJB office had collapsed. The fire and emergency services recovered the bodies of the victims trapped in rubbles. 

According to the police, the building was built under the Rajiv Ratan Aawas Yojana with 300-400 small flats. The building was reportedly constructed during 2007-2010 and required repairs which were not carried out for years. 

The victims’ families work in the Bawana Industrial area as factory workers on daily wages. They used to graze the sheep on the empty plot near the building that had almost no occupancy. 

The fire services had to use cranes and JCB’s to remove the large portions of the building that had collapsed. The police have registered a case in the incident.
