New Delhi, February 28

The Pune police arrested the man suspected of raping a woman inside a state-run Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus stationed at a bus depot.

The incident took place at Swargate state run bus services depot in Pune. The police said the attack occurred at around 5.30 am when the victim, who had been waiting to board a bus to her hometown in Satara, was approached by Gade. He allegedly lured the woman to an empty, air-conditioned Shivshahi bus, and assaulted her. The bus’s windows were sealed shut and her cries for help reportedly didn't reach anyone.

The Pune police began a massive hunt for the accused and nabbed him after 76 hours of search. In a joint operation, teams from the Pune city and Pune Rural police scoured the area around Gunat village, searching nearby sugarcane fields and deploying drones and a dog squad to track the accused.

The police had also announced a cash reward of Rs. 1 lakh after releasing his photo.

The police added that he has a history of criminal activity, with six previous cases against him, including charges of robbery and mobile phone theft in Pune and Ahmednagar. In 2020, authorities took preventive measures against him under Section 110 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which deals with habitual offenders.
