Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has appointed AGMUT cadre officer Satish Golcha as the Director General (Prisons) as incumbent Sanjay Beniwal retired from the services on May 1.
During Beniwal’s tenure, the Tihar prison was rocked by the death of Tillu Tajpuria by rival members of the Jitender Gogi gang the former was stabbed around 90 times inside the high-security prison even as jail officials looked on.
Satish Golcha has high profile gangsters lodged in Tihar and Mandoli jail to supervise. The Delhi excise policy case accused and Aam Aadmi Party leaders, Delhi CM Arvnd Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia are lodged in Tihar Jail at present.
Conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar is also lodged in Tihar Jail who had complained of being asked for extortion sum of Rs. 10 crores from from AAP leader Satyendra Jain to get “luxuries” and benefits in jail. Jain who is also serving his term in Tihar jail had been in controversy before getting special benefits in prisons where videos of him getting massages had appeared on social media. LG Delhi VK Saxena had also ordered for CBI probe in the alleged extortion case against Jain.
The inquiry into the Jain case had led to removal of former DG Prisons Sandeep Goel and suspension of several prisons officiails after which the Centre had appointed Sanjay Beniwal as DG Prisons.
An IPS officer of 1992 batch, Satish Golcha has high security Tihar Jail, Mandoli and Rohini prisons under his supervision and is expcted to tighten the secutiy in the prisons and bring in notable changes in the functioning.
Satish Golcha was currently deputed as Special CP (Intelligence) in Delhi Police. He was previously posted in Arunachal Pradesh and was Special CP (Law and Order, Zone 2) and headed the Delhi Crime Branch earlier among other key posts.
