IB Director Tapan Kumar Deka to continue as Director IB for another year

The extension in service of Tapan Kumar Deka was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for a period of one year beyond June 30, 2025 or until further orders

The Centre has granted one year extension to Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Kumar Deka. The Department of Personnel Training (DoPT) passed an order granting one year extension till June 2026. 

Deka, a 1988 batch Himachal Pradesh cadre IPS officer, was initially appointed Director of Intelligence Bureau for a tenure of two years with effect from June 2022. He was given one year extension in 2024. 

The extension in service of Tapan Kumar Deka was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for a period of one year beyond June 30, 2025 or until further orders.

The DoPT order states, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Shri Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS (HP:88) as Director, Intelligence Bureau for a period of one year beyond 30.06.2025 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in relaxation of the provisions of FR 56 (d) and rule 16 (1A) of All India Services (Death cum retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958”. 

Deka has been an experienced officer in the intelligence bureau since over two decades. He was an Additional Director in the Intelligence Bureau when he was promoted to the rank of Special Director in the Wing in June last year. He was the operations joint director when Indian Mujahideen was at the peak of its terror activities within the country.
