UP Police orders inquiry into suicide of engineer from Auraiya who recroded a video of harassment by wife

Mohit Yadav had recorded and posted a video on What's App stating that his wife threatened to falsely implicate his family in a dowry case if he did not transfer his house and property in her name

New Delhi, April 25

An inquiry has been ordered into the death of a 34-year-old engineer from Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district after a purported video of him surfaced on social media in which he is heard accusing his wife and in-laws of making him commit suicide.

The victim was identified as Mohit Yadav, who worked with a Pune company, was found hanging in a hotel room in neighbouring Etawah district.

The victim had left home for Kota in Rajasthan and the family received the news of his death in Etawah the next evening.

In the video  Yadav accused his wife and in-laws of harassing him and said his ashes should be thrown into a drain if he did not get justice even after his death. The police confirmed that the video doing rounds on social media is indeed of Mohit Yadav.

In the video, he was heard saying that his wife threatened to falsely implicate his family in a dowry case if he did not transfer his house and property in her name. Their marriage took place with mutual consent and without any demands, following a seven-year relationship, he said. His father-in-law had filed a false case against him and his brother-in-law even threatened to kill him,

He is also heard saying, “I wish there were laws to protect men too. Only then I wouldn’t have taken this drastic step. I could no longer bear the mental harassment by my wife and her family.”

The police were informed about a body hanging in a hotel room and recovered the body from the spot. After initial inspection his body was handed over to his family after a post-mortem. The body was then taken to Auraiya, where the funeral rites were performed.

The post-mortem report confirmed the death occurred due to hanging. The deceased’s family has not yet filed any formal complaint with the police.

However, an inquiry into the death is underway, police added.
