New Delhi, September 14

The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttra Pradesh police neutralized dreaded gangster Deepak Verma in an encounter in Varanasi.

Deepak was wanted in several cases; 23 cases of murder, extortion and other crimes were registered against him.

The UP police had also announced a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on Verma.

Deepak Verma has been been a sharpshooter for criminal Prem Prakash alias Munna Bajrangi. Verma had joined the gang of Bajrangi's aide Rayis Banarasi. He became a direct associate of Bajrangi after Banarasi died in a gang war.

Verma had been on the run since 2015, officials said.

As per the STF, they received inputs on the presence of Verma in the Bariyasanpur village, following which, a field unit team led by SP Shailesh Singh and inspector Amit Srivastava cordoned the road near the village.

When Verma and one of his aides came out of the village on a two-wheeler, the cops surrounded them. Verma started firing on the police personnel leading to an exchange of fire between him and the STF. During the exchange, Verma suffered bullet injuries and fell to the ground. Reportedly, his aide managed to escape from the spot.

The police took Verma to SPG divisional hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The officials seized a pistol, a revolver, live cartridges and a motorcycle from the spot of the incident.

Speaking more about Verma, the officials stated that he hailed from the Ramapura Luzxa area of Varanasi and had stepped into the world of crime in 2011. He was arrested due to his involvement in criminal cases but had later stepped out. He had allegedly been on the run since.
