CBI takes over investigation of Chandigarh multi crore parking scam

New Delhi, April 7

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stepped in and took over the investigations into the multi-crore parking scam case of Chandigarh.

The CBI has taken a suo motto cognizance of the case and taken up investigations in the matter. The CBI visited Chandigarh civic body’s office in Sector 17 and seized all the records pertaining to the parking contracts.

The scam came to the fore after the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation approached the banks concerned and tried to encash guarantees to the tune of Rs 6.5 crore that had been submitted by the then Zone 2 parking contractor, whose contract ended in January. The civic body officials had then found the guarantees submitted in bank to be fake and forged.

Chandigarh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested Sanjay Sharma, the director of the parking firm (Paschatya Entertainment Private Limited). Sharma had given fake bank guarantees to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The police had later arrested the contractor Anil Kumar Sharma.

The FIR was registered following a complaint by the civic body’s superintendent (parking) Sunil Dutt who alleged that Sanjay Sharma and others submitted forged bank sureties.

The Chandigarh Police had lodged an FIR under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and it was then handed over to EOW wing on March 6 following which Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code was added to the FIR.
