New Delhi, June 29

The Derabassi police allegedly shot a man who got into a spat with them. After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the police claimed the firing was in self defence.

The injured man was identified as Hitesh Aggarwal (24), a resident of Habetpur village of Derabassi.

Hitesh has sustained a gunshot wound on his leg and was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Sector 32, Chandigarh.

The police said the incident took place on June 26 when a police team was patrolling in the Derabassi area. The team spotted and stopped a couple on a motorcycle for checking and asked to check their bag.

The woman entered into an argument with the policemen. After this, the woman called some more residents of the area to the spot, who allegedly threatened the police team as well as damaged their vehicle.

The argument turned more serious, following which the police had to open fire in the air. However, the mob protested further after which the police opened fire at the crowd, injuring Hitesh.

Mohali SSP Vivek Sheel Soni ordered the registration of an FIR against Mubarakpur police post in-charge, Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh. Singh was also suspended from services.

A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against three policemen. The Mohali police have constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the firing case in detail.

The police have registered an FIR under Sections 324, 354, 336 and 509 of the IPC at Dera Bassi police station.
