Former Delhi CP, DG BSF Ajay Raj Sharma dies after prolonged illness

He was a 1966-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre and first IPS officer from outside the AGMUT cadre to be appointed as Delhi CP from 1999-2002

New Delhi, February 13

Former Delhi Police Commissioner and Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) Ajay Raj Sharma died at a hospital in Noida after prolonged illness. 

Sharma was suffering from lung infection, was admitted to Kailash Hospital two weeks ago. He is survived by his wife and two sons. He was 81.

He was a 1966-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. During Sharma’s tenure with the Uttar Pradesh Police, a Special Task Force (STF) was formed to counter organised crime in the state. The STF, led by his team, gunned down gangster Shri Prakash Shukla in September 1998.

His performance led to his induction into the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre by then Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani. He was appointed the commissioner of police in Delhi in June 1999.

Sharma completed his primary education in Dehradun. He graduated from the Allahabad University in 1965. He was selected for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in his first attempt and chose IPS. He was allotted the Uttar Pradesh cadre and received his first posting in Agra, where he took part in the encounter of several gangsters operating in the forests along the borders of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Sharma was the first Delhi Police commissioner to be appointed from outside the AGMUT cadre. After serving three years in the Delhi Police, from 1999 to 2002, he was appointed the Director General of the BSF, a post from which he retired in 2004.
