New Delhi, September 9
The state of Manipur has witnessed fresh incidents of violence with drone and rocket attacks by suspected Kuki insurgents, killing six people.
The police have detained 129 individuals for violations in different districts of the state.
The fresh round of violence began on September 7 as militants struck Nungchappi village in Jiribam, resulting in the death of one Yurembam Kulendra Singha (63). They subsequently targeted Rasidpur village, where clashes erupted.
The state had already witnessed clashes between Kukis and Meities that went on for several months. Over 225 people have been killed and around 60,000 displaced since the clashes began.
Crowds attempted to loot weapons from the 2nd and 7th Manipur Rifles camps in Imphal. The security forces prevented them by firing blank rounds and tear gas.
A total of 92 checkpoints have been set up across various districts in Manipur, both in the hills and the valley.
Several forces are present in the violence-hit areas of the state and asked people to remain indoors amid threats of more attacks. The Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) has been patrolling the foothill areas while village defence forces have been carrying sniper rifles in the villages.
Apart from that, hi-tech walkie-talkie sets, bulletproof vests and barrel guns are present in the camp of guards. The police are using army helicopters to monitor the area and conducting searches in suspected areas across the hills and valley.
Meanwhile, a protest broke out in Imphal where people carried torches and marched towards the Governor's house.
Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met with the Governor and demanded that the responsibility and powers of security in the state be returned to him.
