In a first, a woman IPS officer will be the Director General of Police in Meghalaya. The government is all set to appoint Idashisha Nongrang as present DGP LR Bishnoi will demit office on May 19.
Nongrang is a 1992-batch IPS officer and one of the senior woman IPS officers in the state.
Nongrang, who is currently Meghalaya Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guard, has been appointed to the top post for a period of two years.
She is the IPS officer of the 1992 batch belonging to the Assam-Meghalaya cadre (Meghalaya Wing). Nongrang belongs to the Khasi tribe, one of Meghalaya’s three major tribal communities.
Idashisha Nongrang had a brief stint as acting DGP of Meghalaya in 2021.
She had been one of three officers in the running for the top position and several political parties in the state had voiced their support for her being appointed to the position.
The other two officers recommended by the UPSC were RP Meena and Deepak Kumar, after two others, GP Singh (1991 batch) and Harmeet Singh (1992 batch) declined the top job, officially intimating the commission of their unwillingness to take up the task.
Congratulating her, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote in a social media post, “Breaking barriers and making history, Smti Nongrang becomes the first tribal lady from our state to hold this position, a moment of immense pride for all of us. Wishing her all the best in her new role!”
