New Delhi, March 24

An improvised explosive device (IED), went off when a vehicle of a group of security personnel passed through the spot in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district. The security personnel had a narrow escape.

Two jawans and a civilian driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries due to the shockwaves created by the blast.

The police stated that the blast took place at around in an area under the jurisdiction of Madded police station, around 36 kilometres from Bijapur district headquarters.

According to the police, personnel from Special Task Force were returning from an operation when Maoists allegedly attempted to blow up the vehicle they were travelling in by triggering an IED that had already been planted below the road.

In Bijapur, this year began with eight security personnel and a civilian driver being killed when an IED ripped through their vehicle on January 6 while they were returning from an anti-Naxal operation in Abujhmad. Maoists were monitoring the vehicle movement while hiding at a farm over 150 metres from the road, officials said.

In three months in the Bastar region, 13 IED blasts have taken place and 122 others have been detected and defused. Last year, in the Bastar region, 308 IEDs were detected and 52 went off.
