K Annamalai the first young Indian Police Services officer to quit policing and join the Bharatiya Janta Party lost from Coimbatore with 3300 votes in this Lok Sabha elections. He is the first young IPS officer for a powerful stint of give years in policing and quit it only to join politics.
Annamalai, who soon shot to fame in politics and made the president of BJP Tamil Nadu was trailing his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) rival Ganapathy Rajkumar by 33,293 votes.
A 2011-batch IPS officer of Karnataka cadre, quit his service in 2019 and joined BJP a year later. Within two years he was made the President of BJP in Tamil Nadu. While in policing he was posted in Karnataka cadre and served as DCP Bengaluru (South) before quitting and joining politics.
He started as an ASP Karkala in Karnataka and then in 2015 he was appointed as Superintendent of Police Udupi till 2016. He was the posted as SP Chikmagaluru till 2018. He was then posted as DCP (South) Bengaluru.
Annamalai has earned a title of ‘Singham of Karnataka Police’ with his work in Udupi, Chikmagluru and Bengaluru. As a police officer he was known for his resilience and determination.
When the BJP made him the president of TN, a post normally a senior politician gets after years of political career, he was given the onus to change the political trend in Tamil Nadu. His campaigning in Tamil Nadu was abuzz on social media with large crowd gathering and supporters however the elections proved otherwise for him.
The BJP as a party scored zero and failed to even open their account in the state.
Kapussamy Annamalaii (39) was one of the first young IPS officers to quite Indian Police Services and join politics. After quitting police department, he went back to his native village Karur reportedly to take up organic farming. Anamalai was an engineer who graduated from Coimbatore and has a PGDBM from IIM Lucknow before he cleared the UPSC.
Few months later, he started getting groomed as the Chief Ministerial candidate by Tamil superstar Rajnikanth's political party which didn't materialize. He soon joined the BJP and within 10 months he was made the BJP President for Tamil Nadu.
In 2021, he fought for state assemble elections from Arvakunchi constituency in Karu district but got defeated by DMK candidate NR Elango. He however didn't bow down and continued his political roadmap.
In a post on microblogging site X, the IPS-turned-politician wrote, "I bow down to the people of the Coimbatore Parliamentary constituency & thank the 4.5 Lakh voters who bestowed their faith in NDA & BJP Tamilnadu. You believed in the vision of our Hon PM Shri Narendra Modi avl for his Viksit Bharat. You have given us historic votes in the history of Coimbatore PC for NDA, and still, we were short of the winning mark."
"I congratulate & convey my best wishes to the winning DMK candidate of Coimbatore, Thiru Raj Kumar avl. I take this opportunity also to wish the candidates from other political parties & the independent candidates who participated in the race to win the people’s mandate to be Coimbatore PC’s Member of Parliament. Finally, I assure the loving people of Kovai that we will double our efforts to win your love & mandate in the future!" he said.
The poll panel data showed that received over four lakh votes, making him the second-number candidate on the Coimbatore seat.
