SPG Director Arun Sinha passes away

New Delhi, September 6

Senior IPS officer, Arun Kumar Sinha, the director of the Special Protection Group (SPG), passed away at Gurgaon’s Medanta Hospital. 

Sinha was being treated at the Medanta Cancer Institute for liver relates disease. 

A Kerala cadre IPS officer of the 1987 batch, he was the Chief of Border Security Force in Gujarat Frontier before moving on deputation to the Centre. He served as additional director general of police (Special Service and Traffic) in Kerala before going on deputation. 

The Centre chose him to head the most elite force that provides security to PM Narendra Modi. Since2016, Sinha was on central deputation and headed the SPG. 

Sinha also served as Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner, South Zone IG, Kochi Commissioner, Wayanad and Malappuram SP, Intelligence DIG, Thiruvananthapuram Range DIG

A day before his retirement on May 30 this year, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) led by PM Narendra Modi had approved the proposal for the re-employment of Sinha for one year. 

In 2022, the ACC had cleared an extension in temporary upgradation for Sinha as DG (SPG) till May 31, 2023, officials said. 

Only a few know that Sinha was a photographer and had penchant for wildlife photography. His photos ued to get displayed on the walls of BSF office of Gujarat Frontier in Gandhinagar. 

As an IPS officer, his colleagues knew him as a man of few words, calm and quiet. He spent most of his career in Kerala before going on deputation to the Centre. 

He is so far the longest serving Chief of Special Protection Group.
