In a massive operation, the Telangana police busted an interstate child trafficking racket rescued 11 babies and arrested eight people who were part of the gang that used to "sell" children to childless couples. The rescued children are aged between 23 days and three years..
The police informed that accused identified as Kiran and Preeti from Delhi, and Kannaiah from Pune, used to traffic the infants.
The gang "sold" nearly 50 children for anywhere between Rs 1.8 lakh and Rs 5.5 lakhs in Telangana and Andhra Prades. The mediators got up to Rs 1 lakh per child.
The child trafficking racket came to light after Rachakonda Police started a probe following a tip-off regarding the "sale" of a baby girl.
Earlier this year, in April, three babies were rescued after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids at seven locations across Delhi and Haryana in connection with child trafficking. The raids were carried out in several areas in Rohini and Keshavpuram.
Seven people, including women and a hospital staffer, allegedly involved in selling and buying children were arrested by the agency.
