Woman assistant professor in Punjab dies by suicide, her colleagues and supporters protest to book Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains

New Delhi, October 23

A woman assistant professor allegedly died by jumping into Sirhind canal and locals held  amssive protest outside the native village of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains in Rupnagar demanding that he be booked for abetment to suicide based on the contents of a note purportedly written by the deceased.

Balwinder Kaur (35), an assisatant professor has sent voice notes to her parents before taking an extreme step. In a suicide note, she allegedly mentioned and blaimed Bains. 

Balwinder’s two-wheeler was found near the Sirhind canal, about 15 km from her house in Dashmesh Nagar. She had sent some voice notes to her family members before jumping into the canal. The body of the victim hasn’t been recovered as yet.

The purported suicide note, circulated on social media, mentions that Balwinder was issued an appointment letter as assistant professor by the Punjab government in December 2021. However, before a posting order could be issued, the matter went to court where it is still pending. The note mentioned that she had two miscarriages due to stress.

The protest near Bains’ residence was organised by the 1158 Assistant Professors And Librarians, a front that has been waging a struggle to get appointment letters and posting orders issued for assistant professors and librarians in Punjab’s government colleges.

The police stopped the members of the 1158 Assistant Professors And Librarians front from marching towards the house of education minister at Gambirpur village in Rupnagar.

The protestors handed over a memorandum to DSP Ajay Singh listing with their our demands.

The police booked the woman’s husband Sapreet Singh and father-in-law Bagh Singh on charges of abetment to suicide and mental cruelty based on a complaint lodged by her brother nased on the complaint of the deceased's brother.
