'Women Power' in Delhi Police- Seven women IPS officers heading the districts and top investigation agency of Delhi Police

New Delhi, September 26

In a first, seven women officers have taken key roles of leading six districts and a noted investigation agency of Delhi Police. 

The present Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthaana will lead the team of these women officers among others in the top brass who were recently transferred to the new roles. 

The transfers announced on September 25 brought Shweta Chauhan who was DCP headquarters, as DCP Central District. 

The Central district of Delhi police has areas like Daryaganj, Jama Masjid, Hauz Qazi, Nabi Karim to name a few, the quintessential Purani Delhi (old Delhi) areas.

Shweta Chauhan, an IPS officer of AGMUT 2010 batch is known to be a very calm officer who is always smiling. It was under her able leadership the Delhi Police witnessed massive recruitments which were first postponed during the second wave and then resumed with full vigor. 

It was DCP Shweta Chauhan’s vigilance that unearthed a recruitment scam where 11 boys from Haryana were found to be cheating in the police exams. In addition to this, the recruitment cell had found photo of one man in three admit cards taking the trail of investigation to UP, Rajasthan and Haryana. 

DCP Esha Pandey who was heading the DCP PCR is now posted as DCP south East District. DCP Esha Pandey, also from the IPS 2010 batch, made tremendous efforts during both the waves of the pandemic. During the first wave, her teams transported several pregnant women to hospitals with some of the women delivering their child in the PCR vans. Pandey even received an award for her work in March 2021. 

During the second wave, which affected Delhi in the worst possible way, DCP Esha Pandey supervised the transported of oxygen cylinders from Gujarat that travelled over1500 kilometers in a record 24 hours to supply at Delhi hospitals. 

Esha Pandey is also an author of books- Truly Madly Crazily in Love, Someone Exactly Like You, I Will Meet You There and The Mohanbari Murders.

DCP Usha Rangnani, from AGMUT 2011 batch has been handling the North West district of police having areas like Shalimar Bagh, Subhash Place, Model Town, Adarsh Nagar and Ashok Vihar. 

DCP Rangnani’s ace in investigations has solved many heinous crime cases in the North West district. 

However very few know that in record time of 24 hours she has arrested murders in several cases. In July 2021 a 20-year old man was killed in front his father and a 25-year-old woman who was stabbed to death while resisting a robbery in Adarsh Nagar. In both the cases, the accused were held wihin 24 hours after relentless search of CCTV cameras and technical surveillance. Another sensational murder case of a realtor Vinod Bhati was detected within hours and two were arrested who were jailed earlier. In another murder case, a man from Bihar was held within 24 hours who killed his live-in partner in March this year. 

DCP Urvija Goel, also AGMUT 2011 batch, is posted as DCP West. Urvija has worked in the Delhi Economic Offences Wing previously. 

The West districts of Delhi Police has Punjabi Bagh, Kirtinagar, Motinagar, Tilaknagar, Janakpuri and more which are highly populated areas. 

DCP Urvija Goel has been instrumental in the YUVA recruitment programme of Delhi Police which was conducted at the largest scale in West District where hundreds of youth from economically weaker sections and those in trouble with law earlier got jobs in big companies. 

DCP Priyanka Kashyap is the DCP East district that has areas of Mayur Vihar, Pandav Nagar, Trilokpuri, Kalyanpuri, Ashok Nagar to name a few. This district that shared the border with Noida is the entry point of citizens from Noida. The area within the police parlance is also “Jamuna Paar” area of the city. 

Priyanka Kashyap is the 2009 batch IPS officer. She has served in Goa, North East and Chandigarh earlier. 

DCP Priyanka Kashyap thoroughly believes in woman power and wishes to have more women in the force. She voiced for more women police during her posting in Mizoram. 

She supervised a sensitive case in Trilokpuri where a minor girl was brutally raped by her neighbour. The accused was held within hours and Delhi Police submitted a chargesheet in this case within one month ensuring strict punishment as per the IPC. 

DCP Monika Bhardwaj is the first woman officer in Delhi Police to lead the Delhi Crime Branch. Also from the 2009 batch of IPS, DCP Monika has cracked key investigations. 

Monika is known for her silent but impactful work. A third generation police officer from her family, she has zero tolerance for heinous crimes and crimes against women.

DCP Monika’s team cracked upon an Uttarakhand factory in April that produced fake Remdesivir injections and busted the first huge network of the supply of fake lifesaving drugs. It was after her crackdown that the medical fraternity and police department alerted citizens of the fake Remdesivir injections that circulated from the same factory. 

She recently investigated the Nangal minor girl rape case where the Delhi Crime Branch had ascertained the girl who went to fetch water in the crematorium was raped and cremated. The investigation ruled out that the girl had died of eltrocution from the water cooler. 

Benita Mary Jaiker, a 2010 IPS batch officer who has been posted as DCP South. She has been serving in the Delhi Police for more than 10 years now. She was posted as DCP at the 7th Battalion before this.

Jaikar had served in the South District as additional SP earlier. Jaikar will look after a district which has Delhi’s upscale areas of Saket, Malviyanagar, Hauz Khaz, Lodhi Colony, AIIMS and more.
