The Uttarakhand Police have got their 12th Director General of Police in a senior and popular IPS officer Abhinav Kumar.
Abhinav Kumar is a well known IPS officer known for his thoughts on better policing, writing and his experience in policing with Uttarakhand Police, Border Security Force and also in the administration of the Uttarakhand government.
He is an IPS officer of the 1996 batch and serving as the Additional DG (Intelligence) in Uttarakhand Police.
The order issued by the Uttarakhand Home Department stated that Abhinav Kumar will hold the additioanal charge of the DGP following the retirement of 1989 batch IPS officer Ashok Kumar.
The names of IPS officers Deepam Seth and PVK Prasad were leading in the race for Uttarakhand DGP however the Pushakr Singh Dhami government announced Kumar's name as the officiating DGP.
Kumar had also served as the secretary to Uttarakhand CM Dhami for a good period.
He is counted among the best police officers of the state. He has also been the Special Principal Secretary to CM Pushkar Singh Dhami.
He has served in various capacities in Uttarakhand Police. He has been superintendent of police of various districts in Uttarakhand. He became DIG in 2009 and IG in 2014. He was IG Garhwal before being promoted as the additional DGP.
When Section 370 was removed from Jammu and Kashmir, he was serving as IG, BSF on central deputation in the valley.
Kumar hails from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. He is BA with Honours in Philosophy and Economics. He also studied philosophy at the Oxford University.
Abhinav Kumar loves to write, read, trek and debate. He is a regular comunist in national dailies.
Almost 9 years ago, his name came in news when he made a statement regarding police in Satyamev Jayate programme.
Kumar had also written to Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan to apologize as a police officer, when Aryan was arrested in narcotics case and a media trial had started. However, Aryan was freed of all the charges later.
CM Uttarakhand surprised everyone with the selection of Abhinav Kumar as the acting DGP of Uttarakhand Police. Kumar has been one of the key trusted officers of the state police with a wide vision for policing.
After taking over the new DGP of Uttarakhand Police, Abhinav Kumar has vowed to make Uttarakhand a safe haven for women and children, priortise tourists and pilgrims coming to the state and developed Uttarakhand Police as the first and fast responder in disasters and difficult terrains.
